Digitalization Rail

Digital Rail Germany – Automation & ETCS in rail transport

Shaping the mobility of the future with technology

Rail is considered the backbone of sustainable mobility. Technological change is needed to meet growing transport demands efficiently and in an environmentally friendly manner. The ‘Digital Rail Germany’ initiative is one of the key measures to take rail transport to a new level through automated processes, intelligent control and safety technology, and networked systems. Studies show that digital control systems such as ETCS, digital signal boxes and automated dispatching can increase the capacity of existing lines by up to around 15–35%, depending on the scenario.

Modern technologies such as the European Train Control System (ETCS), artificial intelligence, digital twins and predictive maintenance make rail transport safer, more efficient and more flexible. Automated train operation (ATO) and cloud-based control systems enable optimised network capacity, lower operating costs and better integration into intermodal transport concepts. The challenge lies in the safe and reliable implementation of these highly complex systems.
